The film’s relationship to Cate Shortland and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is revealed in an official trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The official trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings includes an appearance by Black Widow. Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, starring Simu Liu, is directed by Destin Cretton. Following Black Widow’s contentious hybrid debut in July, the picture marks the MCU’s first exclusive return to the big screen since 2019.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings follows the same format as other Marvel Studios origin stories, concentrating on establishing the main character and his corner of the series. The participation of the Ten Rings, not to mention the appearance of the actual Mandarin called Wenwu, raised expectations from the start that the movie would have some links to the larger MCU (Tony Leung). Wong (Benedict Wong) and Abomination (Benedict Wong) were among the cameos, some of which were disclosed during the film’s marketing campaign (Tim Roth). Others were reserved for the post-credits sequence, where Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Bruce Banner  made a surprise cameo.

However, a figure from Black Widow makes an appearance from the larger MCU, as revealed in an official Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer uploaded on Marvel Entertainment’s YouTube channel. When Shang-Chi and Katy (Akwafina) arrive at Xialing’s (Meng’er Zhang) underground fighting company, they witness a series of minor bouts, including one involving Helen (Jade Xu), one of the Black Widows liberated from the Red Room by Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Check out the video below:

Helen is battling someone who, in Iron Man 3, was treated to Aldrich Killian’s (Guy Pearce) Extremis. The arrival of Trevor Slattery – the false Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley — makes it the second allusion to the Shane Black-directed film. Prior to his appearance, Wenwu described the fake-out twist from the 2013 MCU movie, presumably as a means for Marvel Studios to make up to fans who were frustrated that Iron Man was never allowed to meet his comics arch-nemesis. Helen’s present condition is unknown except for her name, but based on Jon Jon’s (Ronnie Chieng) response to seeing her, she appears to be in danger.

Nat is already dead because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings takes place after the Infinity Saga. On the other side, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) is in the United States, working for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). It’s unclear whether the two former Black Widows have kept in touch or if they are aware of the whereabouts of Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz).
