Red Guardian claims he once fought Captain America in Black Widow, and it may be possible thanks to the time-traveling trips in Avengers: Endgame.
Because of Avengers: Endgame, Red Guardian claims to have battled against Captain America in Black Widow. Part of Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) history is eventually revealed in Marvel’s Black Widow. Natasha was a member of an undercover Russian intelligence operation in the United States in the 1990s long before she became Black Widow in the Avengers movies. There, she pretended to be a member of a regular Ohio family, with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) playing her sister and Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), a.k.a. the Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz playing her parents. Natasha and Yelena are brought in by the Soviet-Russian Red Room once the job is completed.
Captain America (Chris Evans) travels across time in Endgame to get the Infinity Stones, but things don’t go as planned. Instead of returning to the main timeline after replacing the Infinity Stones, Cap chooses to stay in the past and live a hidden life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). After all, in Captain America: The First Avenger, his life was taken away when he got encased in ice. In Endgame, an elderly Captain America emerges, handing his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
Red Guardian claims to have battled Captain America several times in Black Widow, and speculations suggest that this is accurate. Red Guardian is arm wrestling in prison and claims to have battled Cap in the 1980s. Red Guardian breaks his wrist when a fellow prisoner doubts the tale, claiming Captain America would still be frozen at the moment. Later, Natasha and Yelena free Red Guardian, and he brings up Captain America to Black Widow, wondering if Steve Rogers ever mentioned him. Despite the fact that Rogers was frozen in the 1980s throughout the normal MCU chronology, there’s a chance Red Guardian isn’t lying about Captain America, and it’s all because of Endgame.
There are several different ways Red Guardian may have battled Captain America. Captain America’s time-traveling journey to return the Infinity Stones in Endgame isn’t always a perfect procedure. In the 1980s, he may have taken a diversion and fought Red Guardian for a short while. Also, Cap’s relationship with Peggy is still a mystery. Captain America may have surreptitiously battled crime throughout that time, despite the fact that he was supposed to be hiding. If this is the case, he would have been in his late seventies when he battled Red Guardian. After all, if that wasn’t true, Red Guardian wouldn’t have questioned Natasha about Cap.
The narrative of Red Guardian might be something very different. During a Black Widow viewing party, Kevin Feige addressed the Cap and Red Guardian debate on Twitter, saying, “That is an excellent question. Wasn’t Captain America frozen in ice at the time?” The remark implies that there’s more to the Cap and Red Guardian conflict than meets the eye. It’s hard to accept anything Red Guardian says since he likes to exaggerate stories from his golden days. Even Red Guardian’s anecdotes are feasible in Avengers: Endgame due to time travel.
